Out of ten case presentations during the last month, 50% involve direct conflict related sexual violence, and 70% include violence against women. Our goal is to enable them as lay counselors to respond to the urgent needs of their communities. Recognizing the absence of local health care and particularly mental health care facilities for victims of violence, ICAN in partnership with the Nigerian Neem Foundation has also initiated a pilot peer-to-peer training for its Iraqi and Syrian partners on the provision of psychosocial support to traumatized communities.

In Iraq, Fatima Al Bahadly of Al Ferdows Foundation, convinced religious and tribes’ leaders to stop the tradition of handing over women and girls as compensation to resolve disputes. She provides psychosocial support, post-trauma counseling, and livelihood skills to enable survivors to reintegrate into communities. In Kenya, Sureya Roble as Director of Advocacy for Women Peace and Security Africa (AWPSA) works with women who have returned from Al-Shabab camps and were forced into sex slavery.

Across our network, many of our partners work closely with survivors and ICAN is proud to support their work through our Innovative Peace Fund. ICAN and our partners in the global Women’s Alliance for Security Leadership (WASL) are grateful to the Nobel Committee for drawing attention to these difficult issues. As members of the global women’s peace movements, ICAN is proud to have contributed to this groundbreaking work. The groundbreaking UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security in 2000 and the subsequent resolution 1820 in 2008 acknowledged the use of sexual violence as a strategy and weapon of war. Mukwege are pushing back the curtain of taboo surrounding these issue to draw attention to the needs of survivors – women, men, girls and boys – and to shift the shame and fear away from them and to the perpetrators It takes superhuman courage and strength to retell the stories of personal pain and loss, as Miss Murad has done.

Mukwege, a gynecologist who has treated thousands of sexual violence victims in Congo, and Miss Murad, a Yazidi human rights activist and survivor of sexual slavery by ISIS, have relentlessly worked to bring attention and visibility to sexual violence during wars.
